
* Grenoble : Chartreuse and Vercors Massifs
Like a sentry keeping watch, the old Bastille sits high above the charming town centre of Grenoble. Group travel in a beautiful countryside with lakes and forest lies all around whilst the weather beaten limestone hills and Dauphine Alps form a breathtaking backdrop to this, the Capital of the Alps.
Dates
Arrival of the group at Grenoble in time for lunch. Guided tour of the historical capital of the Dauphine region and its Bastille, a series of fortifications on the mountainside above the town, reached by the oldest cable car in France. The panoramic views are exceptional. Dinner of the group and overnight.
Guided tour of Sassenage Château with its imposing main staircase, exquisite furniture signed by master cabinetmakers, and imposing 17th century kitchens. Then time to walk in the English style park and gardens. After lunch an excursion into the Vercors Massif, following the Bourne Gorges and their impressive canyons. Visit the Choranche caves with their amazing “Cathedral room” teeming with stalactites. Dinner of the group and overnight.
Head towards the Chartreuse Mountains, birthplace of the austere Carthusian order and visit the Correrie, the museum of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. Then on to Voiron and the vast Chartreuse Cellars where the famous green liqueur is still distilled according to the monk’s well kept secret recipe. Lunch of the group.
