* Lyon, Silk and Golden Stones
One of the oldest cities in France, Lyon has a wealth of historic and cultural attractions spanning two millennia. Urban landscapes combine modern day painted murals with ancient monuments, whilst the gentle rolling hills of the Beaujolais region are renowned both for their scenic villages and fine wines.
Dates
Lunch near Villefranche sur Saône. Villages built from golden coloured stone nestle amidst the rolling, vine-carpeted hills. Be charmed by the yellow ochre hues of the buildings, gleaming in the afternoon sun, lending an air of Tuscany to this part of the countryside. Stop at Buisante for fine, far-stretching views then Oingt, one of the prettiest, with its narrow mediaeval streets. Finally time for a spot of Beaujolais wine-tasting. Dinner and overnight.
Guided tour of ancient Gaul’s main city, a capital of industry that has managed to preserve its past treasures. Take in the Fourviere hill with its beautiful Basilica, the presqu’ile between the two rivers, the mediaeval quarter and its courtyards, galleries and “traboules” - or passageways - linking the old streets. Local style lunch. Then enjoy a cruise on the Saone as far as the tranquil Ile de Barbe. Visit a silk workshop and witness at first hand the weaver’s expertise. Dinner and overnight.
Life in paint as told by the city’s colourful murals: over a hundred frescoes in trompe-l’oeil style create a unique open-air art gallery in Lyon city centre. Take a guided tour of this world of poetry, images and art. Lunch.
