The sweet scent of roses pervades the air around the Papal Palace in Avignon during this delightful weekend in May. This favourite of flowers in its infinite variety of blooms and fragrances is shown off to full glory in one of Provence’s most prestigious of settings.

D1 Avignon, the Papal City
Lunch in Avignon. Enjoy a free tour of the old town and its impressive heritage as the City of Popes, or take a guided tour (extra charge) of some of its secret gardens: the Doms Rock, the gardens of Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral and the papal gardens. Dinner and overnight.
D2 Altera Rosa Rose Festival in Avignon (50 km)
Departure to the Alpilles, massive white limestone surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Passing by St. Remy de Provence and the site of Ancient Glanum that defy time. Walk in the hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence. Provencal lunch. Visit the Museum of flavor and fragrance Graveson, to discover the principles of distillation ofaromatic plants in organic farming. Stop in a greedy fig plantation followed by a tasting of jam. Dinner. Housing.
D3 Sights and Smells of the Alpilles (100 km)
Head for the great swathe of rugged white limestone, dotted with olive groves and vineyards, which makes up the Alpilles, passing through St Remy de Provence with its ancient Roman ruins and stopping to stroll in the stunning village of les Baux de Provence, perched on a rocky spur. Lunch is a Provencal style affair then continue to Graveson. Here the Museum of Aromas and Perfume offers a fascinating insight into the distilling of essential oils from organic plants. The day ends on a sweet note with a stop at a “Les Figuieres”, a farm totally dedicated to the fig and boasting some 150 varieties - you can taste some delicious home-made fig jam too. Dinner and overnight.
