What started out as a religious festival some 150 years ago is nowadays a four day event attracting thousands of visitors to Lyon. Locals still place little candles in their windows in honour of the Virgin Mary whilst entire parts of the city come to life with large-scale contemporary light shows and street celebrations.

D1 Fourvière Hill to Lyon old town (35 km)
Lunch in Lyon. Sightseeing tour of the old capital of Gaul, starting at Fourviere hill and going down to the mediaeval quarter with its historical and architectural landmarks. Dinner and overnight.
D2 Silk Industry and Lyon Light Festival (70 km)
Lyon was the silk capital of Europe in its heyday, and the industry was centred around the Croix Rousse district, home to many weavers and silk workshops. Guided tour of this part of Lyon before a local style lunch in the city renowned as France’s gastronomic capital. Afternoon at leisure to explore, and enjoy the fabulous light shows and illuminations during the Festival of Lights. Overnight.
D3 Christmas Market (35 km)
Free morning to peruse the Christmas Market in Carnot Square. Lunch.
