D1 Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands (20 km)

Lunch in Stresa, then a boat trip to the Borromean Isles. Short stop at Fisherman's Island then on to Isola Bella and the sumptuous Palaces with their magnificent terraced gardens. Back to Stresa and time at leisure to explore, or visit the Pallavicino or Taranto Villa (optional). Dinner and overnight.

D2 * Mottarone and the Alpinia Botanical Gardens (40 km)

Days' hiking. Ascent of Monte Alpino for stunning views over the lake and a visit to the Botanical Gardens, and its all encompassing variety of species from Mont Blanc to China, Japan and the Caucasus. Our itinerary continues to Monte Mattarone (1491 metres) from where there's a great panorama of the Alps. Lunch of local specialities in the alpine pastures and time to wander before taking the cable car back down to Stresa. Dinner and overnight.

D3 * Sacro Monte de Ghiffa (50 km)

In the company of your guide head for the nature reserve of Sacro Monte de Ghiffa. Stroll in the still of the chestnut forest in search of wrens and birds of prey. Picnic lunch. Dinner and overnight.

D4 Orta and San Giulio isle (30 km)

Walking tour of Orta, lying at the foot of Sacro Monte, with its baroque buildings, wrought iron balconies, and sedate streets. Cruise across to San Giulio isle. Lunch.
