Through a group trip , visit a land very much fashioned by the elements, the Aveyron is full of rivers and rocky outcrops, canyons and gorges. It's also home to the limestone plateau of the "Grands Causses", and the village of Roquefort with its famous cheese, as well as the record-breaking Millau Viaduct, the highest in the world, gracefully spanning the Tarn river gorges.
Dates
Arrive at Millau in time for lunch. Guided tour with group of the old town and the belfry and a visit to a glove making factory. Commentated tour of the spectacular Millau Viaduct (coach toll 20 Euros). Dinner and overnight.
We set off for the Jonte Gorges and the Méjean Causse (limestone plateau) where we visit the Aven Armand caves with its "stone forest" of some 400 stalagmites. with group Lunch then on to Ste Enimie and free time to explore the mediaeval village. Our route takes us along the Tarn Gorges (descent of the gorges by boat an optional extra). Dinner and overnight.
Direction Mount Aigoual with group . Its Observatory is the last mountain weather station still in activity and it commands widespread views over the Cévennes and Languedoc regions. Visit the meteorology exhibition and Mount Aigoual. Lunch then on to marvel at the impressive Navacelles Cirque in the Vis Valley. Return via La Couvertoirade, founded in the 12th century by the Knights Templar. Dinner and overnight.
We drive with group to Roquefort sur Soulzon and visit one of natural caves where Roquefort cheese is matured, followed by some tasting. On to Ste Eulalie de Cernon and a guided tour of the remarkably preserved and imposing Templar fortress. Lunch.
