D1 Picture-Making in Epinal (130 km)
Lunch in Epinal. The “Imagerie” tells the town’s history of picture-making. Illustrations and images were sold much as newspapers, and the tradition is alive even today. Designs and drawings from over two centuries, and the techniques used to produce them, can be admired here. Dinner and overnight.Group travel
D2 Sweet Treats in Nancy (150 km)
Begin the day at a brewery, and taste some of the local beer. Guided tour of Nancy, the Golden town, taking in the impressive Stanislas Square, the old town, and also the Art Nouveau style town houses. Continue to Commercy, which had its heyday in the 18th century; a favourite with art and history fans but better known for its cakes! The small, buttery shell-shaped cakes or “madeleines” are a local speciality; visit a cake maker’s for tasting. Dinner and overnight.Group travel
D3 Verdun, Metz and Mirabelle Plum Liqueur (180 km)
Guided tour Verdun, and its underground stronghold of some 7 kms of tunnels, home to over 10,000 men during the famous World War 1 battle. Lunch then on to visit Metz. Guided tour by Tourist Train, then visit the imposing Gothic Cathedral of St Etienne. Grown in Nancy and in Metz is the small, sweet, dark yellow Mirabelle plum. Take a guided tour of a Mirabelle distillery making a variety of alcoholic beverages followed by a tasting session. Dinner and overnight.Group travel
