Day 1 St Nicolas de Bourgueil – Saumur, the jewel of the Loire Valley (25 km).
Arrive in the late morning for a visit of a winery and taste the locally produced wine – Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. After lunch, tour the walled city of Saumur and its castle. Serving as an actual fortress in the thirteenth century during the minority of Saint Louis, then as a country home, the fort of the Dukes of Anjou is the very picture of a fairytale castle . Dinner. Accommodations.
Day 2 Montreuil Bellay, the last “closed city” of Anjou (40 km)
Enjoy a guided tour of the city fortified with ramparts during the Hundred Years War of which impressive vestiges remain. Delight in a lunch of fouées – a local delicacy – in the cool air of a troglodyte cellar. Discover the taste of these wonderful rolls, hot fresh out of the oven, cooked on a wood fire. Garnish them with salted butter, potted meat, green beans, and goat’s cheese. Following lunch, visit the castle that embodies both the might of the Middle Ages and the refinement of the Renaissance. Witness a presentation, and try an introductory class to the game of boule de fort, a tradition that has been kept very much alive at the heart of the region around Saumur. Dinner. Accommodations.
Day 3 Fontevraud – Underground Chateau de Breze (90 km)
Enjoy a guided tour of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, one of the largest monastic citadels dating back to the Middle Ages. The building was classified a Historic Monument in 1840, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Lunch. Explore the underground fortress of Chateau de Brézé, strolling through the deepest dry moats in Europe, and the entire troglodyte cave system where men, women and soldiers had lived for nearly 500 years. Dinner. Accommodations.
Day 4 The National School of Cavalry in Saumur (40 km)
Go behind the scenes of the National School of Cavalry, dubbed in French the Cadre Noir, – see the stables, tack room, the grand riding arena … Find out the story of the Cadre Noir, its mission and its functioning in all its detail. Witness the work of the stable employees of the Cadre Noir in the grand riding arena and listen to the comments provided by a member of the stable team in order to fully appreciate the art of dressage, jumping over fences, long rein riding, and the mastery of show jumping and the riding presentations.
