Travel right down into Italy’s boot heel with this coach tour, and the Apulia region with its unique “Trulli” stone houses, Rome, Napoli, Bari and its diverse architecture and the many other impressive monuments both religious and military in origin that never fail to impress.
Dates
Guided tour of Rome taking in the most important monuments from its Christian past notably St. Peter's Square and Basilica. Lunch then head south to Sorrento. Dinner and overnight in the Sorrento region.
Guided tour of Naples and the old town around the central square, the Piazza del Plebiscito and the San Francesco di Paolo Basilica, the Salerno Palace, and the Royal Palace...Lunch then direction Apulia. Dinner and overnight in the region of Bari.
Guided tour of Bari old town, a fascinating mix of Roman, Lombard, Arab and Byzantine origins, with buildings such as the St Nicola basilica, the Cathedral, and the Castle. Lunch then on to Castel del Monte, home to Frederic II of Souabe, and time to visit the mediaeval castle, unusual for its octagonal form. Dinner and overnight.
Leave for Taranto and its harbour. Guided tour of the old town on an island or "Citta Vecchia", including the Piazza Fontana, via Cariati, the Duomo and church of San Domenico Maggiore, the castle and communal palace. Lunch then continue to Alberobello, land of the Trulli. Guided tour of these traditional local houses : dry stone square bases with conical grey-tiled tiled roofs. You can climb onto the rooftops for the best view of the countryside. Dinner and overnight.
Enjoy a guided tour of Lecce reputed for her honey coloured, flamboyantly decorated baroque style buildings : the Porta Rudie, the Rosario Church, the Palazzo Vescovile, the Castello, and the Santa Croce Basilica. Lunch then a visit to the spectacular Castellana Caves some 60 metres beneath ground. Dinner and overnight.
First stop Matera for a guided tour of the « Sassi di Matera », the infamous troglodyte dwellings, not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a favourite with many film-makers. After lunch we continue our journey to Campania. Dinner and overnight in the Sorrento region.
On to Caserte for a guided tour of the Palace, home to the Royal Bourbon family of Naples, with its splendid gardens, woods, hunting lodges and onsite silk production. After lunch continue to Rome for dinner and overnight in the region.
