Spoil yourself with a tour of Italy's historic cities: Florence, star of the Renaissance, the old University town of Bologna with its towering feudal towers, Ravenna and its stupendous mosaics, and the crowning glory of them all, Venice, "la Serenissima"!!! Dates
Depart for Vicenza for a guided tour of the historical centre, Unesco world heritage site, taking in the Olympic theatre, the Santa Corona church, and the "Corso Palladio". Lunch then continue to Verona for a guided tour of the town, with its mix of antique, gothic, renaissance and roman monuments such as the Roman amphitheatre, the Piazza Bra square, and the Arche Scaligere - the gothic arches marking the Scala family tombs. Home of star-crossed lovers, "Romeo and Juliet", a visit to Juliet's house is an optional extra. Dinner and overnight in the region of Lake Garda.
Direction Bologna, one of Italy's oldest University towns. Lunch then a guided tour of the city : the famous Piazza Maggiore, the San Petronio Basilica, Neptune's fountain and the soaring feudal towers of "La Garisenda" and "L'Asinelli". Lunch then the chance to sample some Pignoletto wines from the hills surrounding Bologna. Continue to Tuscany for dinner and overnight in Montecatini Terme.
Destination Florence, and a guided tour of the city and the famous Piazza della Signoria square, a real life museum with many Renaissance period statues to admire. Visit the Baptistery of St John famous for the "Gates of Paradise" sculpted doors, Giotto's Bell tower some 85 metres high, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Uffizi Art Gallery. After lunch our route takes us towards the Adriatic coast. Dinner and overnight in the Ravenna region.
Guided tour of Ravenna, many of whose monuments are Unesco heritage sites, and unique in Europe for its buildings that are decorated with splendid Paleochristian period mosaics, displaying a mix of eastern and western influences. Visit the San Vitale Basilica, the Neonian Baptistery, the Saint Apollinare Nuovo Basilica, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the National Museum. Lunch then free time to do some shopping. Later stop in Classe to visit the Sant Apollinare Basilica. Dinner and overnight.
Guided tour of Ferrara which has conserved many reminders of the mediaeval and renaissance period, such as Estense Castle, the Duomo, narrow mediaeval streets, the onetime Jewish Ghetto, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti palace. A visit to the Estense Castle is an optional extra. Lunch then continue to Padua, onetime capital of the Venice region, whose Saint Anthony's Basilica draws pilgrims the world over, and whose Scrovegni Church contains Giotto famous frescoes. Dinner and overnight at Lido di Jesolo.
Private boat crossing from Punta Sabbioni to St. Mark's Square, for a guided tour of Venice taking in the "Porta della Carta" (the old entrance to the Doge's Palace), St Mark's Square with its magnificent Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the Clock Tower. Lunch then a boat trip, by private boat, to visit the islands of the lagoon: Murano built on several islets linked by bridge, famed for its glass blowing workshops, then Burano with its brightly coloured house fronts - cherry, apricot and lavender - where hand-made lace is very much an ongoing tradition. Dinner and overnight.
