D1 Santiago de Compostela

Lunch then a guided tour of the town taking in the Obradoiro façade and the Cathedral, the façade of the Gelmirez Palace, the Alzabacheria thoroughfare, the Casa la Para, the Pazo de Feixoo, as well as the traditional little bars and traders booths in the do Franco and do Villar streets. Dinner and overnight in Santiago.

D2 Treasures of Galicia : from Santiago to Porto (230 km)

Head for Cambados, home of the famous "Albarino" wine cellars, the seaside resort of Toja with its casino and Saint Vincent church. Halt in Combarro to visit the little fishing village with its "horreos", or maritime houses come storerooms. Lunch in Vigo then on to Viana Do Castello where we visit a Port Wine Cellar for some tasting. Dinner and overnight in Porto.

D3 Porto and Aveiro (155 km)

Guided tour of the baroque style Porto, taking in the Stock Exchange, picturesque fishermen's district, and residential area. Lunch then on to Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal. Wander along the canals then cross the Bucaco Park, an oasis of freshness with a variety of plants from tree ferns to rhododendrons. Dinner and overnight in Coimbra.

D4 Coimbra, Batalha and Fatima (225 km)

Portugal's first capital was Coimbra, a city rich in tradition and history. On our guided tour we visit the University, founded in 1290 and its amazing "Joanina" library, as well as the famous "Capelos" hall. Lunch then on to Batalha to visit the impressive Santa Maria da Vittoria Monastery, a gothic masterpiece. On finally to Fatima, place of Christian pilgrimage, with its sanctuary, Basilica and Chapel to the Apparitions. Dinner and overnight in the Fatima region.

D5 Alcobaca, Nazare and Lisbonne (210 km)

First stop the Cistercian Abbey of Alcobaca then we continue via the picturesque fishing port of Nazare to the mediaeval city of Obidos, for lunch. On to Lisbon, in a superb setting on seven hills overlooking the Tagus estuary. Sightseeing tour of Lisbon past monuments such as the Belem Tower, the Hieronymites Monastery, and St George's Castle. A tasting stop at the "Pasteis de Nata" cake shop in Belem is optional. Dinner and overnight in the Estoril region.

D6 The Algarve (435 km)

Direction the Algarve where the fig trees, orange trees, carob trees, and bougainvilleas remind you of North Africa. Our route takes us via the artist's town of Setubal, land-locked Grandola and Santiago do Cacem. Lunch then on to what seems like the end of the world...: Ponta de Sagres and the St Vincente headland, whose sheer cliffs soar above the Atlantic breakers. We continue towards Lagos and Portimao, a sardine fishing port, where we stop for dinner and overnight.

D7 Portugal to Spain : a border of olive groves ! (275 km)

Leaving the coast behind us we head for Faro, the Algarve capital, then Tavira, Monte Gordo, and Villa Real de Santo Antonio at the mouth of the Guadiana River, forming a border with Spain and Andalucia. Lunch near Ayamonte then on via Huelva, and Niebla with its fantastic ramparts, punctuated with square towers and impressive gates. Through the olive groves and vineyards we continue as far as Seville. Dinner and a Flamenco Show in the evening. Overnight in Seville.

D8 Seville and Cadiz (250 km)

Guided tour of Seville, one of Andalucia's most beautiful cities, with its Cathedral, the Giralda Belltower and the Santa-Cruz district, the Alcazar and its stunning gardens. Lunch then we set off for Cadiz, built on a rocky outcrop surrounded on all sides by the sea. Guided tour then dinner, and overnight in the region of Algeciras.

D9 The Rock of Gibraltar and Malaga (140 km)

Excursion to the Rock of Gibraltar, a tiny territory in its own right separated from the continent by a long strip of sand, and with excellent views over the straits of Gibraltar and the town of Algeciras. Lunch then on to Malaga along the coast road of the "Costa del Sol" via Marbella and Benalmadena. Sightseeing tour of Malaga. Dinner and overnight in Torremolinos.

D10 Grenada and Cordoba (330 km)

Guided Tour of the Alhambra in Granada and the Generalife Gardens. Lunch then on to Cordoba. Time to wander in the Jewish quarter with its narrow alleys and flower-filled patios, pass the famous Mosque-Cathedral and the Alcazar. Dinner and overnight in Cordoba.

D11 Madrid (400 km)

We head for Madrid, Aranjuez, stopping en route for lunch. Guided sightseeing tour of Madrid taking in the lovely Retiro Park, the University city, the Law Courts, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Puerto del Sol. Dinner and overnight in Madrid.
