D2 Conques Village Treasures and the Wines of Marcillac (100 km)
Free time to explore the charming rural village of Conques, famous for its Romanesque architecture in particular the beautiful Saint Foy Church. Guided tour of the church and its collection of relics. After lunch, drive through the Lot Valley with its picturesque gorges and villages of character : Entraygues, Estaing, Espalion, and le trou de Bozouls. Stop to taste some Marcillac Wines, one of France’s smallest “appellation controlee”. Dinner and overnight.
D3 Bastide Towns of the south (180 km)
Our itinerary takes us into the Aveyron Valley, via Belcastel and Villefranche de Rouergue. Free time to explore this Royal Bastide town. Carry on to visit a duck farm and sample some of the produce, then lunch on the farm. Continue via the Aveyron Gorges to Najac and its royal fortress dating from the 12th century. Dinner and overnight.
D4 Hilltop Villages of the Lot (180 km)
Head for Figeac, birthplace of French Egyptologist and archaeologist Jean-Francois Champollion, who was the first to decipher Hieroglyphics. Free time to discover the old town and its half-timber sculpted facades, sign of the town’s prosperity across the centuries. Lunch then on towards St Cirq Lapopie perched above the Lot Valley. Continue to Cahors via the Cele Valley and the pretty villages of Cabrerets, Sauliac, and Espagnac. Dinner and overnight in the Cahors region.
D5 Lot Valley and Vineyards of Cahors (80 km)
Visit the prehistoric caves of Pech-Merle with their wall paintings and mammoth engravings. After lunch enjoy a commentated cruise through the sheer-sided river valley of the Lot. On then towards Cahors to visit a wine cellar and do some tasting. Dinner and overnight.
D6 Cahors and Black Truffles (30 km)
Enjoy a panoramic view of Cahors from Mont St Cyr before a little train ride around the old town and its famous 14th century fortified bridge, the “Pont Valentre”. Stop at a Truffle Farm for a demonstration of “cavage” : searching for the much sought after “black diamond”.
