Arrive at Brussels airport where you will be met by your English-speaking guide. Local coach transfer to 3* hotel in Brussels. Dinner and overnight.
Guided tour of Brussels on foot and by coach taking in city highlights including the Laeken district - home of the Royal Residence, the famous Mannekin Pis statue - a national symbol, the huge central square or Grand Place and the traditional architecture and narrow streets of the “Ilot Sacre” or “sacred islet” quarter. Time at leisure for lunch before heading for beautiful Bruges. Guided tour taking in the Béguinage dwellings, the Lac d’Amour, Notre Dame church, the old Market with its striking Belfry towering over the square . A cruise on the numerous canals is optional. Check-in to your 3* hotel in the region of Bruges or Ghent. Dinner and overnight.
The birthplace of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Ghent is a lovely University town with a wealth of beautiful historic buildings lining its winding canals. Discover the Cathedral and the Ghent Altarpiece, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, one of the Middle Ages’ most famous paintings by Van Eyck, as well as the “Gravensteen”, or Castle of the Counts of Flanders, and the “Graslei” or Herb Quay, site of the 12th century harbour. Continue to Antwerp, Europe’s second biggest port. Free time for lunch and to explore. On then towards Holland via the Windmills of Kinderjik, a group of 19 windmills dating from the 18th century, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pause here for you to admire the site before continuing to Rotterdam. Check-in to your 3* hotel in the Rotterdam region. Dinner and overnight.
Head into Rotterdam to see one of the world’s largest ports by boat, on a Spido Harbour Cruise. Then on to Delft, famed for its blue and white ceramics, and take a guided tour of a pottery. Free time for lunch and to enjoy Delft before moving on in the direction of The Hague, and a sightseeing tour by coach. A visit to the Madurodam Miniature Park, where you can see detailed scaled down models of many traditional Dutch buildings and landmarks is optional. Check-in to your 3* hotel in the Amsterdam region. Dinner and overnight.
Guided tour of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, famous for its extensive canal network but also its tall and narrow brick townhouses that line many of them. Pass by the Place de la Monnaie square, and the Flower Market followed by a visit to a diamond cutter’s. Lunch at your leisure then a cruise along the canals. Free time in Amsterdam or a visit to the Rijskmuseum National Museum (optional). Dinner and overnight.
Direction Marken and Volendam, traditional fishing villages where you may see some residents wearing local Dutch costume still. Visit a typical farm, a cheese dairy with tasting as well as a wooden clog manufacturer. Lunch at your leisure before continuing north to the polder region as far as the North Sea Protection Works and its monumental dike, a remarkable feat of civil engineering. On then to Germany and Bremen. Check in to your 3* hotel in the Bremen region. Dinner and overnight.
This morning leave for Hamburg and enjoy a guided tour of Hamburg old town with its 17th and 18th century traders house, nowadays home to some of the best taverns in town. Red brick is the material of choice for many of the town’s buildings such as the gothic style Church of Saint Catherine. Lunch at your leisure before continuing to Denmark, arriving in Odense at the end of the day. Dinner and overnight in the Odense region.
Guided tour of Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the famous writer of children’s fairytales. A visit to the house where he was born is an optional extra. Lunch then continue to Faborg, one of Denmark’s prettiest towns, and on to Kvaerndrup. Guided tour of Egeskov Castle, situated on an island in the middle of a lake surrounded by wonderful oak forest. Dinner and overnight.
Leave for Roskilde. Lunch and then a guided tour of the town, including the Cathedral where Denmark’s Kings and Queens have been buried since the Middle Ages. A visit to the Viking Museum is an optional extra, where you can see 5 Viking ships restored from their watery grave at the fjord entrance where they were sunk to protect the town from pirate invasions. On to Copenhagen for dinner and overnight.
Guided walking tour of Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital and one of northern Europe’s loveliest cities. Explore the centre of town with highlights being the Town hall, the Little Mermaid statue, and the Tivoli. Lunch then a visit to the Renaissance castle of Frederiksberg built by King Christian IV. Dinner and overnight.
Back to Germany on the Rodby to Puttgarden ferry crossing, and continue to the Hanseatic city of Lubeck, with its imposing red brick tower gate. Free time for lunch then continue to Munster. Check-in to your 3* hotel in the Munster region. Dinner and overnight.
Guided tour of Cologne, one of Germany’s oldest cities known for its magnificent Cathedral whose twin spires dominate the city skyline. Free time for you to lunch before continuing to Luxembourg. Check-in to 3* hotel in Luxembourg. Dinner and overnight.
Luxembourg City, capital of the Grand Duchy at the heart of Western Europe, occupies a strategic location on the Bock promontory. Guided tour of this picturesque site, transformed over the centuries into a solid fortress, taking in the historically impressive old town and ramparts, the Palace of the Grand Dukes, and the Parliament. A visit to the underground tunnel network - the casemates - is optional. This extraordinary network of galleries covers some 23 kms, and was hewn from the rock under the town in the 18th century, as a place of shelter and defence. Free time for lunch then on to Belgium.
