Our europe incoming compang propose here now the heart of Spain in the footsteps of Don Quixote. You will discover during excursions differents landscapes of vast plains and Sierras, lagoons and countless castles, and the archetypal windmill crowned hilltops, characterise this scarcely populated, gently undulating, sun baked region, setting of one of literature’s most famous works of all time.
Arrive in the afternoon in Madrid. Sightseeing tour of the capital taking in the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza d’Espana, the Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace. Dinner and overnight in the region.
D2 Toledo and Consuegra (230 km)
In the morning, we explore Toledo. Guided tour of the town within the ramparts and its citadel, cathedral, synagogue, and the church of Santo Tome, which houses El Greco’s painting “The Burial of Count Orgaz”, is widely considered as one of his finest works. Lunch. On to Consuegra and free time to explore this Roman town and its castle. Our route continues to Ciudad Real. Dinner and overnight in the area.
D3 Daimiel National Park and Ciudad Real (90 km)
We have the services of a local guide for the whole day. Tour of Ciudad Real, founded in 1255, with its abundance of religious buildings and the Don Quixote Museum where you can get better acquainted with this legendary literary character. Then on to the Daimiel National Park, a refuge for migratory birds. Lunch. On to Almagro where we visit the town and its theatre famed for its annual classical music festival. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
D4 In the footsteps of Don Quixote (265 km)
A day in the company of a local guide. Visit Argamasilla de Alba and the Medrano cave where Cervantes began to write his masterpiece. On to Campo de Criptana and a halt in this tiny village, surrounded by huge windmills where the knight-errant famously “tilted at windmills” , in his confusion, mistaking the them for giants, and attacking them. Lunch then on to El Toboso, which in Cervantes book was home to Dulcinea, Don Quixote’s imaginary lady-love. Here you can see houses typical of La Mancha region. On the way back to the hotel we stop at Puerto Lapice with its windmills and roman road. Dinner and overnight.
D5 The Lagoons of Ruidera and Villanueva de los Infantes (310 km)
A day in the company of a local guide. Sightseeing tour of the Ruidera lagoons and the Montesinos Grotto, scene of a symbolic and very important episode in the book. After lunch we continue to Villanueva de los Infantes, first a Roman town then Arab, with its numerous monuments : the Plaza Mayor and its classic houses, the Renaissance style hospital, the Santo Domingo convent. Also famous as being identified as the place in La Mancha, “whose name I do not want to remember”, as mentioned in the opening lines of Don Quixote. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
D6 Return journey
Departure for France. We stop en route in Alcala de Henares to visit Cervantes birthplace, then lunch.
