D1 Lyon, Beaujolais Villages and Golden Stone Country (60 km)
Arrive in Lyon airport (flight under own responsibility), where you will be welcomed by our local Guide. Transfer with your local coach to Villefranche sur Saône, where you will discover villages built from golden coloured stone nestle amidst the rolling, vine-carpeted hills. Be charmed by the yellow ochre hues of the buildings, gleaming in the afternoon sun, lending an air of Tuscany to this part of the countryside. Stop at Buisante for fine, far-stretching views then Oingt, one of the prettiest, with its narrow mediaeval streets. Finally time for a spot of Beaujolais wine-tasting. D2 Lyon, the Saône River and the Silk Industry (15 km)
Visite the ancient Gaul’s main city, a capital of industry that has managed to preserve its past treasures. Take in the Fourviere hill with its beautiful Basilica, the presqu’ile between the two rivers, the mediaeval quarter and its courtyards, galleries and “traboules” – or passageways – linking the old streets. Free lunch. Then enjoy a cruise on the Saone as far as the tranquil Ile de Barbe. Visit a silk workshop and witness at first hand the weaver’s expertise. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
D3 Painted Walls of Lyon and Grenoble (140 km)
Life in paint as told by the city’s colourful murals: over a hundred frescoes in trompe-l’oeil style create a unique open-air art gallery in Lyon city centre. Sightseeing tour of this world of poetry, images and art. Free time for lunch. Continue to Grenoble, guided tour of the historical capital of the Dauphine region and its Bastille, a series of fortifications on the mountainside above the town, reached by the oldest cable car in France. The panoramic views are exceptional. Check in to your hotel in the region. Dinner and overnight.
D4 Sassenage Castle and the Vercors Massif (130 km)
Commentated tour of Sassenage castle with its imposing main staircase, exquisite furniture signed by master cabinetmakers, and imposing 17th century kitchens. Then free time to walk in the English style park and gardens. Free time for lunch. After that an excursion into the Vercors Massif, following the Bourne Gorges and their impressive canyons. Visit the Choranche caves with their amazing “Cathedral room” teeming with stalactites. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
D5 Chartreuse Mountains (30 km)
Head towards the Chartreuse Mountains, birthplace of the austere Carthusian order and visit the Correrie, the museum of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. Then on to Voiron and the vast Chartreuse Cellars where the famous green liqueur is still distilled according to the monk’s well kept secret recipe. Free lunch. Continue to the region of Thonon les Bains, then a tour of the Bellevaux Valley taking in the village, the church with its onion dome bell tower, the lake at Vallon and the goat farm. D6 Lake Geneva and Savoyard legends (100 km)
We visit Thonon les bains, a spa town on the shores of Lake Geneva. Free time for lunch before setting off for a drive through some neighbouring villages. At each stop your guide will have you spellbound with tales of myth and legend including those of “Servant”, “the Spell casters”, and “the Healers. By the end of the day we will stop to taste some local products. Dinner also will feature Savoyard regional dishes. Overnight.
D7 Annecy (160 km)
A day outing to Annecy with a boat trip on the lake. Free time for lunch, after that we explore the picturesque old town, and stroll along the banks of the Thiou, the lake outlet. Our return route takes in Thone, Le Grand Bornand and the col de la Colombiere pass. Dinner and overnight.
D8 Yvoire and Genève (80 km)
We set off for the mediaeval city of Yvoire and explore its castle, ramparts and fortified gates. Free lunch. Continue to Genève for a visit of its old town and harbour with the famous water-jet.
D9 Retourn Journey (20 km)
Breakfast. Coach Transfer to the airport of Geneve (flight under own responsibility). End of our services.
