D1 Paris (20 km)
Welcome on arrival and transfer to Paris. Guided sightseeing tour including the Champs Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, La Concorde – the capital’s largest square, the Paris Opera and the Latin Quarter. Take to the majestic River Seine to admire the city’s monuments from aboard one of the popular ‘bateau-mouche’. Dinner and overnight in Paris.
D2 Paris (20 km)
Guided tour of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (mass may be attended), and the ‘Ile de la Cité’, home to the capital’s famous Notre-Dame Cathedral. Lunch at your leisure then free time to explore the historic and colourful Montmartre district and the imposing Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Dinner and overnight.
D3 Paris – Nevers – Paray le Monial (370 km)
Leave for Nevers, to visit the reliquary where the body of Bernadette Soubirous is preserved in the St Gildard Convent. The eldest daughter of a miller from Lourdes whose family fortunes declined with the arrival of steam power, Bernadette is best known for her 18 visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1858. Lunch at your leisure then continue to Paray le Monial. Guided tour of the Basilica and cloister, continuing through Paray and visiting the Chapel of the Apparitions, Chapel of Claude la Colombière, the Renaissance style Town Hall and the Saint Nicholas Tower. Dinner and overnight in Paray le Monial.
D4 Paray le Monial – Ars – Lyon (150 km)
Destination Ars to visit the Shrine of St. John Vianney, beloved parish-priest of Ars and patron saint of parish priests. Lunch at your leisure then depart for Lyon and a guided tour of this ancient capital of Gaul taking in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière dominating the hill and district of the same name, the heart of the city or ‘presqu’île’ between the two rivers, picturesque old Lyon with its narrow streets, inner courtyards, and ‘traboules’ or corridors linking two streets through a building. Dinner and overnight in Lyon.
D5 Lyon – La Salette (320 km)
Set off for La Salette, a unique sacred site some 1800 m above sea level. Free time for lunch then visit the Basilica of Our Lady of La Salette, site of the Marian apparition. Mass may be attended. Dinner and overnight in La Salette with a torchlight procession in the evening.
D6 La Salette – San Damiano (410 km)
Journey into Italy via Briançon and Turin to San Damiano al Colle. Visit the Shrine of Our Lady of the Roses. On 29th September 1961, Rosa Quattrini, a mother of three children, was miraculously cured by a heavenly visitor. Some time after this, when she was taking part in a pilgrimage Father Pio told her that she would witness a very important event. On the 16th October 1964, the Virgin Mary appeared to her in the pear tree in her garden. Until her death on 5th September 1981, mamma Rosa had over 2000 apparitions and almost as many messages, some of which have been made public. Check-in to your hotel in the Piacenza region. Dinner and overnight.
D7 San Damiano – Padua (260 km)
Leave for Padua and free time for lunch. Guided tour of Padua taking in St. Anthony’s Basilica with its mix of Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic elements, the Palazzo Zabarella, the Piazza Antenor and the Scrovegni Chapel which houses Giotto’s masterful frescoe cycle. Dinner and overnight in the Padua region.
D8 Venice (110 km)
Continue to Venice and take the waterbus or vaporetto from Tronchetto to St. Mark’s Square. Guided tour of Venice and the highlights of the city: St Mark’s Square, Basilica and Bell Tower, the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. Lunch at your leisure then free time to enjoy Venice. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
D9 Padua – Assisi (370 km)
Direction Assisi and visit the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Angeli (St Mary of the Angels). Free time to lunch then a guided tour of Assisi, hometown of Saint Francis and Saint Claire, visiting the lower and upper churches of the Basilica of Saint Francis, their wonderful frescoes, the crypt, the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Church of San Damiano, and the mediaeval city with its narrow streets. Mass may be attended at the Basilica. Dinner and overnight in Assisi.
D10 Assisi – Rome (180 km)
Continue to Rome. Your sightseeing tour passes the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, the Palatine Hill, the Forum, the Capitoline Hill, the National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, and the Quirinal Palace – home to the Italian President. Lunch at your leisure then a guided tour of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and across from it the Church of Saint Praxedes. Finally visit the Basilica of St John Lateran, cathedral of the Bishop of Rome. Dinner then overnight in Rome.
D11 Rome and the Vatican Museums (20 km)
A day given over to the Vatican. Your guided tour starts at St Peter’s Square and Basilica, continuing to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Lunch. Then continue along the Via della Conciliazione to the Castel Sant’Angelo, commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a Mausoleum for himself and later used as a fortress and castle by the Popes. Take the Ponte Sant Angelo bridge, renowned for the ten Baroque statues of Angels, then the Corsi Vittorio Emanuele II to the square of Campo dei Fiori and the Piazza Farnese, home to one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, the Palazzo Farnese, seat of the French Embassy. On route to the Pantheon, behind Piazza Navona, stop to admire the Caravaggio paintings in the Church of St Louis of the French. End the day with a visit to the Pantheon. Dinner and overnight in Rome.
