D1 Allauch Christmas Crib & Provencal Christmas Market (60 km)
Lunch near Allauch, then a visit to its extraordinary Christmas Crib. This Provencal Nativity creche displays around 450 hand-crafted figurines or “santons”, some thirty of which are animated. Afterwards, depending on the date, visit one of the region’s Christmas Markets – Allauch, Cuges les Pins, La Bouilladisse, Saint Savournin or Auriol, – as craftsmen from all over gather in the village to sell their wares. Dinner and overnight.
D2 Christmas Traditions in Marseilles (50 km)
A chance to visit Marseilles’ Folklore Museum with an excellent display of local life and traditions in the region over the last few centuries, including a collection of nativity scenes with traditional “santons” figures. Lunch, or the option of a “Provencal traditions” lunch. Free afternoon to make the most of Marseilles’ vibrant Christmas Market all along the main thoroughfare, la Canebiere, as far as the Old Port, and the Santons (crib figurines) Fair. D3 Aubagne : Pagnol’s Provence and Santons Fair
Novelist, playwright and director Marcel Pagnol often chose his home of Provence’s as the setting for his tales. Take a tour of the house where he was born, as well as picturesque spots that have featured in his films such as Raimu’s Well, or the Mas de Massacan stone cottage. Provencal lunch then visit a craftsman making the santon figurines. On the cours Foch you can enjoy the Santons Market and marvel at the creche. Dinner and overnight.
D4 Martigues, an island in Provence (50 km)
Leave for Martigues, the « Venice of Provence », with its network of canals and quaysides linked by little quant little bridges. Explore the Christmas Village next to the Miroir aux Oiseaux canal in the very heart of town, and sample some shellfish, a local speciality.
